Tables Supporting Youth Briefs 1 & 2

This report contains four tables supporting the Youth Briefs 1 and 2, headed “STRAIT IS THE GATE: THE MATRIC CONUNDRUM”.

Table 1 sets out all the possible routes from Grade 10 to Grade 12 which can be accomplished in four years.  For each route, it indicates, by means of crosses, the category of entrants in the National Senior Certificate.  The published statistics for each category in 2015 and 2016 are entered into the lower portion of the table.   Where available, the number of candidates enrolling for the examination are indicated, as well as the number who actually wrote the examination and those who passed it.

The top part of Table 2 sets out the ways of passing the National Senior Certificate in November, March and June.  It indicates the ways for which we have achievement information.  The lower part of the table indicates the support over and above regular instruction in schools which is available for the various groups of candidates.

Table 3 sets out statistics published in the annual examination reports from 2008 to 2016.  The lower part of the table indicates the position in the March 2015 supplementary examination.

Schools are divided into quintiles by the economic status of the communities in which they are located.  Quintile 1 contains the schools in the poorest areas, and Quintile 5 contains the schools in the richest areas.  Table 4 sets out examination statistics by quintile in 2015 and 2016.
